Summer Sailing FAQs: Everything You Need to Know Before You Set Sail

Planning a summer vacation in Orange Beach or Gulf Shores? If you’re looking for a family-friendly adventure that’s equal parts relaxing and unforgettable, a sailing cruise aboard Sail Wild Hearts checks every box.

Before you climb aboard, here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often.

Sail Wild Hearts Sailboat Orange Beach

Is summer a good time to go sailing in Orange Beach?

Absolutely! Summer is one of the best times to experience sailing along Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

Warm temperatures, long daylight hours, calm Gulf waters, and plenty of opportunities to spot dolphins make summer cruises especially popular with families. Whether you’re joining us for a daytime adventure or a sunset sail, every trip offers a different view of the coast.

Will I get hot on a summer sail?

Let’s be honest: summer on the Alabama Gulf Coast is undeniably hot, and the humidity can catch first-time visitors off guard. That being said, a sail is one of the better ways to beat it. Once we’re underway, the Gulf breeze helps keep the air moving and it’s a much different kind of heat than laying on the beach or walking around town. Our shaded cabin also gives you a comfortable place to cool off whenever you need a break from the sun.

What if the forecast says there’s a chance of rain?

Don’t panic if your weather app shows a 40% or 50% chance of rain. That’s actually very common during a Gulf Coast summer. Many summer days include a brief afternoon shower or thunderstorm that moves through quickly before the sunshine returns. A forecast with rain doesn’t automatically mean your sailing adventure is in jeopardy.

Of course, safety always comes first. Our captain keeps a close eye on weather conditions and will make any necessary decisions if storms are expected to create unsafe conditions. If weather impacts your cruise, our team will keep you informed every step of the way.

What should I bring?

We like to keep things simple. All you’ll really need is sun protection, your camera, and your sense of adventure.

Wear comfortable, breathable clothing that you don’t mind getting wet. Quick-dry fabrics and UPF shirts are especially nice during the summer months. You’ll also want to wear sunglasses (polarized lenses are best for cutting glare on the water) and a wide-brimmed hat.

Of course, be sure to bring (and apply!) sunscreen. At least SPF 50 is recommended for peak summer days when the UV index is highest. And if you’re planning to swim during one of our adventure sails, bring a towel.

Can we bring snacks and drinks onboard?

Absolutely. We provide complimentary iced water on our morning dolphin cruises, plus soft drinks and juices for sale. You’re also welcomed to bring your own food and beverages in a smaller cooler. Guests over 21 are permitted to bring alcoholic beverages onboard, but no glass containers, please.

Kids Sailing Helm

Is summer sailing good for kids?

Yes! Kids love spotting dolphins, watching the crew raise the sails, swinging over the water, and exploring the catamaran while parents enjoy the views. Captain Zach has even been known to let our smaller sailors take a turn at the helm on calm summer days. It’s an experience the whole family can enjoy together.

Will we see dolphins?

Summer is peak dolphin season along the Alabama Gulf Coast. While wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, it’s common to see dolphins swimming alongside the boat or surfacing nearby during your cruise. Keep your camera ready because those moments happen fast.
